A motorcycle accident in Chattanooga claimed the life of a 67-year-old man, marking the third in a week in the city. As reported by TheChattanoogan.com, a Dodge Caravan was travelling southbound on Broad Street when it turned left onto 25th Street, ultimately striking the victim who was traveling northbound on the same street. The fatal traffic collision occurred around 8:37 p.m. The motorcyclist, a resident of Hixson, lived for two days following the crash, but later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the Dodge Caravan, reportedly a 37-year-old Hispanic man, was taken to the Hamilton County Jail and charged with failure to yield the right-of-way, not having insurance, and not having a valid driver’s license. The 67-year-old victim of this accident was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps who enjoyed motorcycle riding and was an avid fisherman. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, as well as his two children and three grandchildren.

This fatal TN motorcycle crash marks the third motorcycle victim in a week. A 24-year-old man and a 57-year-old former city police officer died late Sunday night and early Monday morning the same week. Both of these victims tragically died on impact.

A motorcycle accident can cause serious and life-threatening injuries to riders, largely because a motorcycle does not offer the same protection as other vehicles. As such, motorcyclists are more vulnerable in a collision. The Tennessee Department of Safety reports that there were 143 fatal motorcycle crashes in 2008, with more than 2,500 causing injuries.

The results of a motorcycle accident can be devastating, and a crash is very likely to cause a motorcyclist and his or her passenger severe injuries that may require a lengthy recovery.
