Chattanooga Intersection Car AccidentAccording to a Jackson Sun news report, the Jackson City Council has voted to change vendors for the city’s intersection cameras, switching from American Traffic Solutions to Redflex. In addition, city police have discussed the possibility of adding new traffic cameras at the intersection of Airways Blvd. and U.S. 45 Bypass. A lieutenant with the Jackson Police states that this particular intersection has seen an increase in motor vehicle accidents and crash-related fatalities as well. Currently, there are traffic cameras at four Jackson intersections, including two at U.S. 45 Bypass (Channing Way and Oil Well Road intersections) and two at North Highland Ave. (Carriage House Drive and Old Hickory Blvd. intersections).
An engineering study will be conducted on all intersections that currently have cameras, as well as the new one at Airways and Bypass, and based on the results the city will consider adding east-west cameras at all intersections that have cameras. A Council member does note that one of the key issues is the fact that there has been a decrease in accidents at intersections with traffic cameras, but there has been an increase in rear-end collisions. However, the Jackson police lieutenant asserts that rear-end crashes are less harmful to motorists than other types of accidents and tend to produce “very minor injuries, if at all …” as opposed to angle crashes, which may result in more serious injuries.
Under the new contract, from the $50 paid for a traffic camera citation, the city will net $18.75 from each of the first 100 citations, $20.75 for the 101 to 200th citations, and $30.75 for every citation above 200. In each tier, Redflex, the new camera vendor, will receive the remainder of the funds. The Mayor of Jackson sees the benefits of the traffic cameras, but states he also understands why people are against them as they have a problem with “Big Brother watching over them.” However, he explains that the cameras save on personnel cost and puts police officers in other situations where they may be needed.
Accidents at intersections can result in very serious injuries for anyone involved, which may mean costly medical bills and expensive vehicle repair.
