What is a Motor Vehicle Safety Recall

presented by: Gary Massey
When you purchase a new or used car, you expect it to meet the safety standards necessary to protect your family should an accident result. In order to ensure vehicles sold in the United States meet these standards, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) creates and enforces certain safety rules and regulations. When some part of a car, truck, or other vehicle doesn’t meet these minimum safety requirements, the manufacturer or the NHTSA may issue a motor vehicle safety recall to correct the problem.
When a safety recall is issued, the motor vehicle’s manufacturer must provide a remedy. The remedy may be to have the defective parts fixed or replaced. Under the federal Safety Act, the manufacturer must provide information for car owners about how to fix the safety issue. The fix must be free for car owners, must be safe, and must effectively solve the safety problem.
Owners with vehicles subject to a safety recall must receive, from the manufacturer, a notification letter explaining the recall. The letter must explain what the problem is, what harm it can cause if it is not fixed, how the owner can get it fixed, and what the owner should do if they cannot take advantage of the free remedy. Owners who have trouble getting their cars fixed properly can also contact the NHTSA for assistance.
When part of a car, truck, or other motor vehicle does not work properly, serious accidents and injuries can result.
