Tennessee Mine Accident Claims Kentucky Worker’s Life

Posted On: October 2, 2012 under

A Kentucky man lost his life recently in a Tennessee mining accident when the roof of the mine in the area where he was working collapsed on him, according to an article in The Harlan Daily.

Rescue workers responded to the scene at the mine in Claiborne County after hearing reports that one or more workers had been trapped in a cave-in. At the scene, they discovered that only one person had been caught when the ceiling collapsed. The injured man was transported to a local hospital, but medical staff were unable to save him from the grave extent of his injuries.

The mine company and the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the fatal work accident, which is the first for the company in 17 years. The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MHSA) has not said whether it will also send investigators to review what happened at the mine. The sheriff’s office reported that it had not found evidence of any criminal investigation, and it expects its investigators to finish their work at the mine shortly. The mine company and the MHSA may continue to investigate in order to address possible safety issues, however.
