Research from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and other sources suggest that hiring an attorney after you’ve been injured in a car accident can lead to receiving two to three times the amount of insurance money that filing a claim on your own would deliver.
A similar study performed by the Insurance Research Council found that, on average, a person injured in an auto accident received $3,262 from insurance if he or she did not have an attorney. Those who hired an attorney, however, averaged $11,939 per person. Even after paying attorney’s fees, those who hired a lawyer had more than twice the amount in their pockets as those who didn’t.
According to insurance giant Allstate, policyholders who settle with the help of an attorney generally receive two to three times the amount of money as those who settle without an attorney. In the face of this huge difference in payouts, many insurance companies train their customer service staff to put insurance claimants at ease and lead them to believe that the insurance company has the customer’s best interests at heart – even though the insured’s needs, to pay for medical bills and other losses, are directly opposite the insurance company’s desire to pay as little as possible after an accident. Insurance companies may also provide brochures or other information designed to talk claimants out of hiring an attorney.
